The South Weld Sun Page 2
The History Of Refrigeration
It was last Friday, we were driving along on Hwy. 52
and we met a fairly new ptckup being dnven carefully so as
not to turn over a refrigerator which was standing up m the
back box. Now comes the historical part. Eddie and I were
married in 1946. ~ We lived in a little service station house
between the RR tracks and Hwy. 6. Her folks lived in Ft.
Morgan and they had bought a new refrigerator and offered
us the old one. In those days ammonia was used as a
refrigerant and the smell would knock you over. I guess that
in moving it from the house it sprang or sprang a leak.
Ervin and Eileen Mitzel rode with Gus and Evelyn Krtzman
down to Ft. Morgan to help me load the refrigerator into
the .trunk of our 1936 Plymouth coupe. Well, they aced
ammonia to bring back prise fighters between rounds. Scott
Baker once stuck a bottle under my nose in chemistry class
and I'll tell you it is not perfume. So somehow Gus, Ervin
and I got the refrigerator m the trunk of the '36. Eryin was
going to ride with me. He did for about two blocks. "I God
I got to get outla here!" So I turned the windshield out in
front with the crank, you older folks will remember tilting
windshields, I rolled the window down and away I came for
home. 1 could drive because the air was moving through the
car and out the back. I drove in down by the garage and
Ervin and Gus helped me unload il. The next morning when
I went down to open up I was unlocking the front door
when a breeze blew ammonia gas around the corner, l threw
up right on the spot.
Father Sanger sold me a used refrigerator which had
a sealed unit. He sold it to me chewp. I was assured b~
Burroughs and Ginther of Brighton that they could cut ~t
open and repair it. So Fred Bath loaned me his 41 Chew
pickup and I look it over to Brighton. They rewired it and
called me to come and get it. So I got Fred s pickup and we
loaded it and I came for home. About two miles east of
Brighloa I looked out the back window and that sucker was
leaning back and about to go over. I hit the brakes and it
came down kerbang which made me have to speedup. It was
back and forth for a block or so. When I got home I was
going to carry it in the little hottse. But how? I had Eddie
push it over onto my back and I carried it in. About half of
the way in it occurred to me that I didn't have anyway to let
it down. Suddenly the refrigerator got lighter, I d>dn't
question my luck, I just went on into the kitchen and sat it
down. 1 looked my benefactor in the eye. He was the
July 9, 1998
Tennessee bet""ore Harry kidnapped her aed brought her out
here. Her family and fnends couldn't raise the Ftve Million
ransom and she just had to stay here.
I was out watering up my Jack's Bean Vines and I
thou>;ht I saw Billy Herold coming by in his electric chair on
wheels. But it wasn't him. This fellow's name is Charles
Foster. He said be used to be a dairyman over on 133 and
Huron. He lives at the Assisted Living here in town. He is a
nice man. After be left I got to wondering if Ben Ginther
might know him since Ben grew up in that neighborhood in
Eastlake and might have sold him some hap or something.
So I called Ginthers and got Barb, like Bazbara Ann Coan
in her childhood. She didn't recognize Charles but knew a
Chazley. She told me that Suzanne Mowery, Lany's wife, is
Charley Foster's daughter. I guess that is why be is living
here. By the way I saw Rika Sauter and she said Joho had
taken her out to the farm and they were combining John's
9 eaz old boy was wanting to run the combine. Like father
like son. liika was in fine spirits.
If time catches up with you and he generally does,
you could certainly,do worse than joining Mazk Gray and
his crew at the Gray Cara or Melvm and Geni Steckel at
Aladdin. I think it beats the tar out of leaving your friends
completely.
If i get to riding the bicycle again I'll keep them in
mind.
Merton and Faye Scott went to a Colorado Rockies
baseball game this past spring. Merton asked an usher how
he got his job and he introduced him and his good wife Faye
to the boss usher. Anyway, they are et oying their
retirement and part time fobs already, but i~ey took the
Rockies jobs on as a way to see free ball gawes and get paid
for it. Now they have been in on the All Staz ball game and
the home run contest. How about that7!
Public Notice
Re-3(J) School
Organization Planning
Committee
This commitla will
holding public meetings on
followtog dates:
Ken Barney
`Pub'li'c No`ttc'-~
Coors Eaergy Company (CEC), P.O.
Box 467, Goldcn, CO 80402, (303)
277-3455 has applied to the
Colorado Division of Minerals aad
' Geology (CDMG) Cor a technical
be rovisioa to rctato the cttrreat water
the diversion structures, the perimeter
ditches and the sedimentation pond,
^.--manrnt "tract ores "~ ih~
