I own and operate Dependable
Lumber Co. I know from first hand experience what it is like not to have the coal mines
operating in the North Fork Valley. When the mines closed down in the mid 80's the
bottom fell out of the real estate market. Many businesses were forced to close or
move away, Main Street in Paonia looked like a ghost town. I for one don't wish to see
that happen again. I was forced to lay-0ff all my employees except for four, today I
have sixteen full-time and three part-time.
1 for one support Bowie Resources Federal Coal lease and Right-of-Way Application.
The coal industry provides jobs for Miners as well as the support group of vendors who
provide goods and services for mines.
I know that we have been blessed with a few people who are not interested in growth.
These people will attack any positive growth issues. I feel we must come to some sort
of equitable solution for all involved, but to cancel the coal lease for Bowie Resources
would be disastrous for Paonia and the surrounding area.
Sincerely,
~~e~~
Kenneth Byers
Owner
Dependable Lumber Company
