D04155GE
1.0 INTRODUCTION
This report presents the results of the geotechnical engineering slope stability study we conducted
for the Eureka Gravel Pit. The study was conducted at the request of Mr. Louie Girode, San Juan
County Road and Bridge Department in accordance with our proposal for geotechnical engineering
services dated July 8, 2004.
The conclusions, suggestions and recommendations presented in this report are based on the
data gathered during our site and laboratory study and on our experience with similar soil
conditions. Factual data gathered during the field and laboratory work are summarized in
Appendices A and B.
1.1 Brief Project History and Background
The Eureka Gravel Pit appeared to include mining of talus material from the toe of the slopes at
the northern end of the abandoned town of Eureka Colorado. We understand that the mining at
the site ceased in about 1997 and that no disturbance of the toe of the slope has occurred since that
time. The removal of the material at the toe of the slope during the mining operation created
headward erosion and raveling of the talus materials.
Evidence of regular debris flow activity along the portion of the County Road 125 above and
west of the gravel pit was observed. We understand that removal of debris along the roadway is
common after significant precipitation events.
1.2 Scope of Services
Our services included geotechnical engineering field and laboratory studies, analysis of the
acquired data and report preparation for the proposed site. The scope of our services is outlined
below.
- The field study consisted of describing and sampling the soil materials encountered in
four (4) small diameter continuous flight auger test borings at the gravel pit site.
- The soil materials encountered in the test borings were described and samples retrieved
for the subsequent laboratory study.
'~12TITT~TE2 ~ ~CYCL~ ~SSIDCLFItEB
CONSULTING GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEERS AND
-1- MATERIALS TESTING
