A total of 16.67 acres were surveyed an the four sins. A Greyaunc field imestigauu surveyed the perimeter <br />and an adjacent buffer zone of 20 feet fur each site, and traversed the entire survey site area; at regular, 511- <br />[oot wide intervals. <br />Survey Results <br />No Grand Mesa penstemon plants were observed during the survey conducted un August 17, 1993. Although <br />potential habitat For this species occurs within the project vicinity, all ul the sites surveyed umaisted ul nunh <br />and northeast facing slopes with variable soil conditions for which there are no documented Grand Mesa <br />penstemon sightings. <br />Two of the sites surveyed supported Penstemon plants, one of which, on site 1, was identified as Rocky <br />Mountain penstemon (Pensrenron srricnu). Positive determination of species was not possible fur the second <br />plant, located on site 2, due to the absence of flowering parts. However, comparison of the vegetative <br />structures for this plant wuh those for Grand Mesa penstemon identified that the plant was not Grand Mesa <br />penstemon.
