Water Level Measurement by October 31 of Each Year,
Stipulation #32, Canadian Strip, NOV C-94-025, Permit No. C-81-026
To: David Berry
From: Randy Price
Date: October 26, 1994
~~
~~~~~
DEPARTMENT OF
NATURAL
RESOURCES
Roy Romer
Governor
dames 5. Lochhead
Executive DireUOr
M¢hael8 Long
Dwivon Director
I have reviewed the hydrology monitoring plan for the Canadian strip mine and I believe that
stipulation #32 is no longer necessary. Stipulation #32 was applied to the 1987 permit renewal and
requires the mine to submit an annual water level measurement for water monitoring well #7 by
October 31 of each year.
STIPULATION NO. 32
THE HYDROLOGIC MONITORING PLAN WILL CONSIST OF MONITORING THE
SPOILS WELL ANNUALLY FOR WATER LEVEL AND TO SUBMIT THE RESULTS
TO THE DIVISION BY OCTOBER 31 OF EACH YEAR.
Slurco Corporation, the operator of the Canadian strip mine, has been taking annual water level
measurements, but in the past two years has submitted this data after October 31. This data had been
submitted with the annual hydrologic report. This constitutes the water monitoring program for the
mine.
The original purpose of the stipulation was to get water level data to the Division as soon as
possible. This was necessary so that the hydrologist could make an early evaluation of the recovering
spoils aquifer. The data that has been collected for the past 8 years show that water level
measurements have stabilized and are now at equilibrium with annual precipitation (see chart below
from the DM&G annual hydrologic report review).
