• • ~ III IIIIIIIIIIIII III
-- 999
~~~I,~~
Boz 6035, We
Colorado Spy 1~
April 24, 1< ~~~v
i
U~I2~~1'G1_-l~~w~ r
Governor Roy Romer ~ ~~ aZ3q
State Capitol Building ~~.,~
Denver,Colorado 80203 JF"'
_'~":~
Dear Sir:
FILE ~'~.
This is a plea that the Castle Concrete Company's re_
quest to the Mined Land Reclamation Board to develop a mining
operation in the Snyder N,uarry in the near future not be al_
lowed, If there is any way you can assist in preventing this,
it would surely be appreciated by all those, like myself, who
find the destruction of the Front Range offensive, I deplore
the plan to destroy this area near Williams Canyon and the Cave
of the Winds twenty years from now, and allowing this to take
place in the next few years is intolerable,
Castle Concrete has not demonstrated any signlficant re-
gard for the aesthetics of the area, and has made only minimal
reclamation efforts in the to cations it has already defaced,
Once removed, the natural appearance of the Front Range will
never be restored, so any further request to add to the destruc_
tion which has already occurred should be most carefully considered,
It is not as if this grade of limestone could not be obtained
elsewhere, The trucks might not be able to use the main highways
and their drivers might have to go further, but I think that
would be a much more ecologically sound solution than systemati_
tally destroying acres of natural beauty,
I live opposite one of Castle Concrete s operationsand I
have watched in dismay the clouds of dust that rise regularly
from their blasting, The loaded trucks turn onto the freeway
directly below my house and these trucks are never covered, so
the dust and gravel from their loads trails them as far as they go,
Surely with environmental protection currently being em_
phasized as it is, allowing this mining operation is in no way
desirable, and if it cannot be stopoed completely, it should be
postponed as long as possible, I hope that you, and all others
with any influence in the matter, will say "finough:" before it
is too late,
Yours very truly,
(DSR . ) KATHERIA'E L, WALKER
