Lung
TO: Kent Gorham °'""""' oi,e""'
FROM: Steve Shuey~~
RE: Trapper Mine, File No. C-81-010, Annual Reclamation Report
I reviewed the '94 ARR for Ttapper Mine as you requested. The spoil sampling results
indicate that no adverse affects to vegetation establishment should be expected attributable to
the physical or chemical properties of the spoil. The seed mix changes are acceptable, but
please have the operator justify the seed mix changes. If there are good reasons for these
changes, then perhaps the information will be beneficial to us and other operators.
As we discussed, the yearly changing of seed mixes could create plant identification
nightmares during revegetation success monitoring and evaluation. Please suggest to the
operator, that they settle on an adequate seed mix and keep it in place.
As expected, the perennial vegetation is slowly taking over the "no seed" areas from the
annual and biennial species. The operator should be aware that 1994 is the last growing
season within which they can perform limited interseeding or transplant of native species,
limited rill and gully repair, fertilization or weed control without reinitiating their ten year
reclamation liability time period. They should evaluate their data in reference to their
vegetative success standards and determine whether they need to perform some of these tasks
in order to achieve their approved revegetation success criteria.
I was unable to evaluate whether noxious weed infestation problems exist due to the limited
information provided in the ARR. The no seed areas provide an ideal environment for their
establishment and should be inspected carefully for this problem.
cc: David Berry
M: \OSS\amm\memokag. sss
