Determine the concentration of the elements of
interest by Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry. Dilute
the sample solution, as necessary, with deionized water to
bring the concentration of the element(s) of interest into
a suitable concentration range.
CALCULATIONS.
Element (wt ~a) _ (r(g/ml in solution) (d.f.) Weigh 20 g of each sample into separate
50 ml beakers. Add 20 ml of water and stir for one-half hour.
Allow the solutions to stand for one hour and read pH directly
`rpm our meter.
III. Results: The element analysis of the soil samples revealed
some information about the suitability of the overburden soils
to be used as a foundation for re-establishing vegetation
around the U.S. Soil quarry site. See Table I. The concen-
tration of zinc was fairly uniform among the soil samples
analyzed. This could be indicative of the similarity of.
parent rock for soil formation. The sodium content of the
overburden from the west. and east side was higher than the
undisturbed areas. Sodium although needed in minute
quantities, is toxic to plant growth. Magnesium content was
uniform in the undisturbed soils, but the overburden on the
east side was higher, and the overburden from t}~e west side
was lower than the values for the undisturbed areas.
Potassium content was highest in the east side undisturbed
soil samples. Samples of the overburden from both areas and
the west side undisturbed area were lower. Iron content
showed no correlation with samples. The undisturbed areas
were 1.26 in the east sample and 1.05$ in the west samples.
'Phe overburdens were not similar either. It is apparent,
however, that the overburden samples were higher in iron
than the undisturbed areas.
Total aitrogen content for the soil samples w~
interesting. The west side undisturbed sample had the
`iigltest concentration of nitrogen, with obviously more
organic matter than any of the other samples. The east side
overburden samples had the next highest concentration of
-3-
