The selection of a procedure to determine when reclamation is adequate is
needed. The return of constituents in runoff water to premine levels is a
reasonable approach to determine when the mine area has been adequately_
reclaimed. Generated sediment is likely to be the controlling constituent
r
because land stability will probably be the most difficult item in mine
reclamation. The present baseline data do not define the expected sediment
TSS or SS levels for different flood sizes. Additional baseline data are
being collected to define this relationship for the Trapper Mine. This
information should allow the determination when sediment (TSS or settleable
solid (SS)) values are representative of premine conditions for a particular
runoff event. Therefore, the return of surface runoff constituents to pre-
mine concentrations is proposed to govern when sediment ponds can be
removed. C~ '" U '~', ~(,o S . b`C~I~
4.8.1.5 Operational Surface Water Quali
Numerous samples have been collected at the surface water monitoring sites
and a few analyses of the water in the settling ponds have been conducted.
Samples which were collected in 1977 or later are included in the operational
monitoring table. Table 2.7-18 gives the premine surface water quality.
Most of the drainages were not disturbed at the start of mining and therefore
some of the results presented in this section are baseline concentrations.
Table 4.8-8 gives concentrations for total suspended solids (TSS), total dis-
solved solids (TD S), conductivity, pH, total iron,~'[otal manganese and oil
and grease for the surface water sites. Map M3 ,~~hows the locations of the
surface water sites. Only a few samples in 1~9/~7~~~ere measured from sites S1,
S2, S3 and S4 because these are no[ in the (gcti``ve area. Numerous data are
given for the Johnson, No Name, Coyot~ and Buzzard Gulch sites.
~`\
4-205
