Roadside Mine. The mine is located at 4850 feet elevation and
receives an average of 8 to 10 inches of precipitation annually.
The surrounding vegetation is of the salt desert shrub community
type.
The mine has two refuse piles. One pile was completed last
year. Slopes are 2 1/2:1 with a north and northwest exposure.
Physical and chemical analyses of refuse material were conducted
and the results are presented in Table 5. These analyses
indicate that the material is non-toxic to revegetation. There
is a shortage of topsoil and other material to cover the pile.
The mine constructed experimental revegetation plots in 1983
using varying amounts of topsoil to determine the minimum amount
of soil cover needed for revegetation. In 1986, sampling was
conducted to determine success on the various plots. Seedbed
depths of 6, 12, 24, and 48 inches were tested for percent cover,
production, shrub density, and species composition. Results of
the sampling are that:
- There is not a strong correlation between species
presence and soil depth;
- Total vegetation cover increases with soil depth up to
24°;
- Production increases with soil depth (48" excepted);
- total vegetation cover and production increases from the
3-6
