east and came in to calling and perched in a nearby tree. After a short while he flew to the west
and joined the female. During a day visit in July the nest canyon was checked and two juvenile
spotted owls were found perched together in a white fir in a tight canyon. Both birds were
downy and very young. The female was heard calling (unprovoked) from the rock ledges above
the juveniles, and apparently was roosted on a cliff ledge or pothole. The area contained
abundant whitewash and casts indicating heavy use. No additional effort was made to track these
juvenile birds.
Red Creek Canyon: Three visits were necessary to determine occupancy and reproduction in
this 2181 acre canyon. The April (late afternoon/night) visit resulted in detection of the male owl
in the east canyon. There was no sign of the female as she was not seen or heard. We presented
three mice to the male in hopes he would take them to the nest site, but he consumed all three
mice. We revisited the area in July during the daytime and found no sign of any owls in either
canyon. There was no whitewash or fresh pellets in any of the usual locations. The site was
again searched in early September in the evening and both canyons were looked at. The male
responded to hooting just before dark in the west canyon and we moved in close as he stopped
hooting. Soon the female was observed sitting in a nearby tree. The male joined her and they
vocalized for some time in the area. She came in very close and we were able to observe the le;
band on her right leg (blue) and confirmed her as the female banded in 1997. We assume the
male is the same male that has been in Red Creek for many years. We did not see or hear any
evidence of juvenile birds in the canyon and assume no reproduction took place this year.
Survey Results
Location Status Young Survey Dates
Phantor.: Canyon Si.^.~le - 5/10, 7/17
Milsap Creek Pair 2 5/3, 7/1 I
Red Creek Pair - 4/24, 7/13, 9/7
