Species Diversity
The diversity of plant species in each area will be evaluated using data acquired from the 50 meter
point-intercept transects. Data from the transects will be analyzed implementing Equation 4 to
determine the relative cover of each species detected.
~ Relative Cover of Species X = ~ Cover of Species X (4)
~ Total Veg. Cover
Post-mining success of species diversity will be determined by comparing the relative cover values
of the reclaimed area with the values ascertained within the vegetation community reference area. The
permit states: Kaiser will establish a reclaimed vegetation community with a minimum of two cool
season grasses, two warm season grasses, and two fort species. Additionally, within the post mining
vegetation community, no single species will comprise more than 40 percent nor less than three
percent of the relative cover. There is no cover requirement for shrub species.
Kaiser will submit a Phase III draft report for review of data in the fall of 1998. We welcome all
comments from the CDMG.
We will call you in June to let you know the exact dates of our sampling. If you have any questions
or need additional information on our scope of work, please feel free to contact me at (303) 850-
0930. We welcome all comments from the CDMG.
Sincerely,
11 ~
Ryan Hennin
Staff Biologist
Enclosure
cc Jerry Koblitz - Greystone
Mike Keegan -Kaiser Steel
