EVALUATION OF BEAR NO. 3 MINE LANDSLIDE <br />RECEIVED <br />INTRODUCTION <br />dAN 21 1998 <br />Division of Minerals 8 Geology <br />This report presents the results of a geologic and geotechnical engineering study of a landslide <br />located west of the abandoned Edwazds Mine and Beaz Mine No. 3 portals on the mountainside <br />immediately southeast of Somerset, Colorado. The investigation was conducted to assess the <br />most probable cause or causes of the November 1997 slide movements. <br />The investigation consisted of a geologic field reconnaissance, review of available existing <br />information, a technical exchange with the Colorado Division of Minerals and Geology <br />(CDMG), and preparation of this report. The scope of services included the following: <br />• Site visits were conducted by Mr. David Jubenville, P.E. on November 20, 1997 and Mr. <br />John Rold, C.P.G., and Robin VerSchneider on December 2 and 3, 1997. Mr. <br />Jubenville's visit was limited to approximately 2 hours of observing the slide and taking <br />photographs. Mr. Rold and Ms. VerSchneider conducted a more detailed reconnaissance <br />of the site and studied, photographed, mapped and video taped its features. <br />• Previous studies, topography, and historic mine maps were reviewed and a set of <br />questions were developed for the Bear Coal Company that related to the history of <br />landslides in the area. <br />1 • A technical exchange meeting was conducted with CDMG on December -8, 1997 to <br />1 discuss t11e geology and geotechnical engineering aspects of the slide. <br />1 A review was conducted of the responses and the backup reports provided by Bear Coal <br />Company on December 19 to the questions developed in the item above. <br />r 831-032.411 Wright Water Engineers, Inc.
