Evaluation of Bear No. 3 Mine Landslide
landslides at the head of the slide mass. Downwazd movement of the colluvium along the upper
wetted bedrock colluvium interface effectively over-weighted the lower slopes. At the same time
the ongoing creep and decrease of internal sheaz strength continued. On November 15 the forces
for movement overcame the strength resisting them and the slide took place.
I CONCLUSIONS
Field evidence does not indicate a causal relationship between the Edwards portal spring and
triggering of the November 1997 slide.
Field observations and data indicate that the Beaz No. 3 mine slide was caused by a combination
of naturally occumng processes at a time when numerous other landslides in western Colorado
initiated or renewed their movements.
John W.
