Somerset Mine File - 2 - May 22, 1987
Sites B-6 and H-10
According to the Alternative Water Management Plan, TR#1, approved on
August 6, 1986, Kaiser Coal Company made a commitment to monitor sites B-6 and
H-10 four times a year during the months of April, June, August and October.
There was no record of the April 1987 monitoring results for B-6 and H-10 at
the mine office. Bill Pecharich stated on May 15 that the monitoring had not
been done.
Since peak flows in Bear Creek and Hubbard Creek occurred early this spring
(probably in March), it is no longer possible to correlate the stream flow and
water quality during peak runoff season with the water levels and water
quality of the mine inflow monitoring sites. Seriousness of the failure to
monitor sites B-6 and H-10 is moderate because the Division is eagerly
awaiting results obtained since the mine was sealed in the spring of 1986. No
monitoring was done in the spring of 1986, therefore, we cannot make
predictions of mine water levels or water quality during peak runoff periods.
Sediment Pond #9
On May 15, Bill Pecharich stated that Pond #9 discharged on February 12,
1987. Mr Pecharich also stated that he had taken a water quality sample of
the discharge water and sent it to a laboratory in Orem, Utah for analysis.
There was no record at the mine office of how much water was discharged, the
water quality results of the sample taken, or NPDES forms for the first
quarter of 1987.
9947E
/lal
