CO 81505
Re: Bowie Mine No. 1 (Permit No. C-1981-038)
Technical Revision Application Nu. 34 (TR-34)
Hydrologic Monitoring Reduction
Dear West Regional Wildlife Manager:
The Division of Minerals and Geology hereby issues notice, in accordance with Title 34, Article 33, Section 1 16,
Paragraph 4, of the Colorado Revised Statutes, that on August 2, 2000, an application to revise coal mining
operations at the Bowie Mine No. I was considered complete for the purposes of filing. The revision was
submitted by Bowie Resources Limited. All review and comment periods as provided in the Act and the
Regulations initiate front this date of filing.
Approval of this technical revision would reduce the hydrologic monitoring requirements at [he Bowie No. 1 Mine.
The reduction in monitoring would involve certai[t surface and groundwater stations located within and adjacent to
the Bowie No. 1 permit boundary. In some cases, the monitoring would be suspended. In other cases, the
monitoring would be eliminated. The stations include one ditch and several ponds, springs and wells. Other
surface and groundwater stations would remain to monitor ongoing activities. There has no[ been any coal mining
at the Bowie No. 2 Mine for over 2.5 years. The train loadout continues to operate and reclamation activities are
expected to begin soon a[ the west mine.
The underground coal mining operatiolt is on land located approxiltta[ely 3 miles north of Pao[tia, Colorado. The
permit area is further described as follows:
Portions.of Sections I, 2, 3, IO-I5, 22-2~, Township 13 South, Range 92 West of the 6th P.M.
Portions of Sections ~-8, 17-19, 29-32, Township 13 South, Range 91 West of the 6th P.M.
The above-melttioned tracts of land are shown on USGS 7.5 minute Quadrangle maps of Bowie and Gray
Reservoir.
Because [he above referenced technical revision application would incorporate additional lands into the permit
area or might otltenvise alter previously approved pemti[ conditions or mitigation measures, we are requesting
your agency's evaluation of the proposal. Your comments and concerns relating to the adequacy of fish and
wildlife resources information, the fish and wildlife plan, and [he reclamation plan as i[ relates [o fish and wildlife
considerations, including potential impacts [o threatened or endangered species, are requested. if wildlife habitat
is the proposed pos[mining land use, we request your evaluation of proposed woody plant stocking levels, planting
arrangements, and methods for mitigation of potential adverse impacts.
