General Comments
At the time of the inspection the mine was inactive. Most of the coal
stockpile had been sold off to Mid-Continent Resources.
Upon arrival at the site a discharge was noted from No. 1 Mine which was
apparently acid. The discharge was emanating from a leaking seal in a
pre-law, abandoned section of the workings in the B coal seam. The discharge
had begun on Monday, May 15, and was being routed into the lower wash plant
pond. An orange-yellow "yellow boy" had been deposited along its flow path.
The operator had sent samples of the pond discharge to the Colorado Department
of Health (CDH) and was awaiting a response from the Department. In the
interim the following mitigation measures were being instituted:
1) Diversion of the discharge into the lower wash plant pond for maximum
storage and retention time.
2) Aeration of discharge using a v-notch weir in the collection ditch and a
pump in the pond.
423 Centennial Building, 1313 Sherman Street Denver, Colorado 80203 Tel.
