' Grand Junction Pipe
Surficial Geology Investigation Proposed South Fmita Gravel Pit Extensioq Fruita, Colorado

April 5, 2001
Page 4
' Some petroleum and significant amounts of natural gas have been prospected for and extracted from the Dakota, Burro
Canyon and Morrison Formations. The established producing gas fields are located north and northwest of this tract. These
established producing gas fields are located in the desert area north of the Government Highline Canal and within the
' Bookcliffs, approximately l3 miles north of this site. To our knowledge, exploration for natural gas or petroleum has not
been accomplished in this portion of the Grand Valley. It is possible that natural gas deposits are present beneath this site
but, development of these resources is prohibitive at this time and has not been considered an issue within this portion of the
' Grand Valley.
Radioactive ores have been mined from the lower Burro Canyon and Monson Formations, th the Uncompahgre Uplift to
' the south. )n general, the producing mines and significant deposits are located more than 20 miles south of this site
' GEOLOGIC 1-IAZARDS
This site is within the designated 100 Year Flood Plain, shown on the National Flood Insurance Program Maps for Mesa
' County, Colorado.
During the course of gravel extractioq some steep slopes will be produced. These steepened slopes are temporary in nature
' and will probably undergo wnstant modification. It is believed that after the top soils Gave been stripped from the extraction
area, the height of any steepened slopes will be less than 20 feet and will probably be closer to 15 feet. Significant slope
stability problems are not anticipated on this site during the extraction process. it is recommended that cut or fill slopes above
' the water table be carefully wntrolled to avoid localized areas of instability. The slope surface below the water table will
tend to flatten quite quickly. The amount of the slopes beneath the water table will depend upon the dewatering process and
the amount of dewatering which will have to be accomplished. It is our understanding that the specific requirements for slope
angles within operating and reclaimed gravel pits will be enforced for this site.
' No evidence of significant ground settlement, ground collapse, undermined areas, mass wasting processes (other than the
Colorado River flooding) or other geologic hazards are present on this site or which would affect the extraction ofthe gravel
' on this site. It is not believed that geologic concerns exist on this site which will affect the final reclamation of the proposed
gravel pit.
It is believed that all pertinent points, as related to the Geologic Characteristics, which may significantly affect the proposed
development, have been addressed.
