UNITED STATES SOIL P.O. I have Borne ad~7 i t i oval c~~rnroer~ts that you may want tc~
consider in regard to your high altitude planting.
Sc~rne cif the seed retai I ers may not have the r-ecornmended species
i n stoc4:, arnd spec i a I orders for- srnal I quantities may tie de I aged
i~r- be higher- in price than what the dealer- may have on hand. In
this case yc~u may want to consider trying one ref the alternate
planting rni:;es or "generic rni;;es" many dealers stoc4:: a+, very
reasonable prices. Typical names of =_c~rne of these mixes include
"F'ik:e's F'eak" rni:; -. "Hi:;h Altitude" rni:: ar;d the I i4:e. These mi;:es
may contain c nr more ~gr-ass species bu+, as Iong as they contain
Borne of the species I i st?d be ! caw they w~~u I d pr-c~bab 1 y tie acceptat~ I e,
depend i rig ors ttie purpose of the p I art i ng.
When the Critical Area F'lar~ting (C:AF') nr ~ 342 practice is
recornrr~ended, it is for- bare ground nr disturbed areas, at the
seeding rate for- the trraadcast method of seeding. If the planting
purpose is tv inter seed or crverseed existing stands of vegetation
to provide a better- cover of grass, then the CAP seeding
recorrrnendation rate can be cut in half. Fur-ther-more, if a grass
dr i I I i s used for- an c~verseed i rig pr-act i ce, then the C:AP seed i rig
rate can again be cut in half--for e?;ample, planting only F'LS
pounds of Sheep fescue seed per- acre, multiplied by the percentage
of t'r~is species ire tl-ie rni:; !if `c is of tt~e rni:: is Sheep fescue,
then only 1/'~ Ib. of seed will tie needed can a per acre Gasis). If
the purpose of p I ant i rig i s f r, pasture seeding r~r- over seed i rig,
rather tl-ian a CAP, then fertilizer- and mulch are not r-ecorr.rnended.
Lawn ar:d Turf grass Mi:;
Where a low maintenance, natural lawn is tl-ie goal, Arizona fescue
and one of the native wheatgr-ass (Western car Slernder-), crr even
introduced varieties like Crested Or F'ut~escent, ar-e highly
recc~rnmended fc~r- any rni:: but their cast may preclude their- use.
These species ar-e prefer-aL-~le t.. bluegrass as they ar-e Ic~cal ly
adapted and hardy. Crested is cheaper to use due try its lower
seeding rate, but the ether grasses corr.pete getter- than it.
