(Golder) has conducted freeze/thaw testing program to characterize
the effect of repeated freeze/thaw cycles on the permeability on the Ironclad and Clay
Borrow Soil Liner Fill material.
The Clay Borrow Soil Liner Fill sample (Sample SLC-29) was obtained from Soil Liner
Fill processed for 1996 construction that had been amended with approximately 2%
bentonite. The Ironclad sample was obtained from the Ironclad tailings, and had material
in excess of 2 inches removed to conform to the Ironclad material placed as Soi] Liner Fill
during 1994 and 1995 construction. Classification testing was performed on the samples
prior to [he freeze/thaw analysis, and consisted of grain size distribution and Atterberg
limits. A standard Proctor test was performed on each sample to determine [he maximum
dry density and optimum moisture content. Attachment A presents classification and
Proctor test results.
The focus of the laboratory testing program consisted of measuring the permeability of the
Soil Liner Fill samples after the samples were subjected to repeated freeze/thaw cycles,
The permeability for three samples from each Soil Liner Fill source was tested after zero,
three and five freeze/thaw cycles. The zero freeze/thaw cycle was used as a reference to
determine the effects of [he repeated freeze/thaw cycles.
The freeze/thaw samples were re-molded to approximately 95% of maximum dry density,
and the maximum specified water content. Ironclad samples were remolded to
approximately 3% above optimum moisture content, and Clay Borrow (sample SLC-29)
samples were remolded to approximately optimum moisture content.
The freeze/thaw samples were remolded into a cylindrical PVC mold. The mold was
nvelve inches long and four inches in diameter (inner diameter), and was split lengthwise
to facilitate removal of the sample after testing.
OFFICES IN AUSTRALIA.
