10.2.2.2 Select fill shall be placed in horizontal loose lifts and
compacted to a minimum of 95 percent of the
maximum Standard Proctor density as determined in
accordance with ASTM D 698. The loose lift thick-
ness before compaction shall not exceed 12 inches
for areas amenable to the use of large compaction
equipment.
10.2.2.3 The lift thickness of structural backfill after compac-
tion shall not exceed 6 inches.
10.2.2.4 The in-place moisture content of the select and
structural fill shall be within minus -2 percent and
+2 percent of the optimum. To assure maximum
consistency, water, as required, should be added to
the materials at the borrow area.
10.2.2.5 The Contractor shall be responsible for any damage
to structures caused 6y his operations in placing and
compacting backfill adjacent to structures. Any
damage to structures shall be repaired by and at the
expense of the Contractor.
10.2.2.6 Compacted backfill shall not be placed around or
behind the retaining walls and other cast-in-place
concrete structures until a minimum of 14 days has
elapsed from the concrete placement. Heavy equip-
ment shall not be permitted to operate closer than 5
feet from structures for wall heights less than 8
feet, and not closer than 213 the wall height for wall
heights between 8 feet and 10 feet. Heavy equip-
ment shall not be operated over encased pipelines
and reinforced concrete pipelines until a minimum of
2 feet of compacted fill has been placed and com-
pacted over the concrete.
10.2.2.7 The differential height of backfill behind opposite
structure walls shall not exceed 2 feet during
backfill operation, except at retaining walls where
the final grade warrants a differential height of
greater than 2 feet.
10.2.2.8 The final grade of the fill material around the perime-
ter of structures shall slope away from the structure
a minimum of 6-inches in the first 10-feet, unless
specified as otherwise on the Drawings.
SPEC.
