8 BORROW AREAS AND STOCKPILE AREAS 8.1 GENERAL 8.1.1 The location of borrow areas and stockpile areas, shall be as designated on the Drawings, or as designated by the Owner or Engineer. 8.1.2 The methods and equipment used by the Contractor in the excava- tion of materials in the borrow areas shall be such as will produce the required uniformity of mixture of each of the types of materials _ at the borrow areas. 8.1,3 The location and extent of all borrow pits within the borrow area shall be as designated by the Engineer. The Engineer reserves the right to change the limits or location of the borrow pits in order to obtain a more suitable mixture of earth materials, to minimize stripping or for other reasons that will affect the quality of the con- struction. 8.1.4 The final excavated surfaces of the areas shall be graded and shall be left in a reasonably smooth and even condition. Borrow pit and stockpile side slopes should not exceed 4H:1 V, 8.1.5 Waste materials should be deposited at a location to be designated by the Engineer. The surface of the wasted materials should be left in reasonably smooth and even conditions, with slopes generally flatter than 4H:1 V. 8.1.6 Material to be used as select fill shall be selected from the borrow areas based on its soil properties. Contractor shall use reasonable attempts to separate such material at the horrow area during excavation. The intent of this specification is to maximize recovery of such soils with minimal double handling of the material. 9 EXCAVATION PROCEDURES 9.1 Excavation of trenches and bulk excavation and placement of fill may be accomplished by any method and by use of any excavation and hauling equipment suitable for the work and site, conditions. Unsuitable equipment and equipment in disrepair or unable to perform the intended tasks shall not be mobilized to the work site or used in the performance of the work. SPEC. A -EARTHWORK PAGE 12
