Long
RE: Jesse Minkler Commen , CCRVG Cresson, Am, nd ent #7 Division Director
This letter is prepared i^ anticipation cf your responsiveness sun:n ar}' to address the. issues bf
geochemistry raised by Jessee Minkler in her letter of October 16, 1498.
Item I. Isules of ainc and acid in the +vaste rock and [heir potential contributions to either surface
water or groundwater were left open with the approval of Amendment #6, pending co!npletion of
hydrological and geochemical investigations. Said investigations were addressed in reports
sahmitted in Arendment #7. In brief, the Division is satisfied that most water that falls on the
iiatr _•nu w•tll recharge groundwater in the diatreme. Acid generated in the upper part of the
diatretr,e will be neutralized, and zinc will be removed or otherwise through unknown processes
such a; preciplta[ion of 7_n-aihcates, or adsorption by iron-hydroxides. Water that may ra:rvc
r+roagi+ waste rock Then into the surface water of Areyua Gulch will probably not degrade sL~rfac~:
water standards because the recentlyestablished standards for Areyua Gulch are so mcrcchhl~
high.
Item "'. It is my understandins ti+at the only surface water in Squaw Gulch would he sbrrn +vatcr.
St,~r;n water is managed through BMP's, not water quality standards.
Item 4. Prt backfilling, +ahich was pruposed under Amendment #6; will be withdrawn by
Amer.dn:ent #7. Regardless, the Amendment #7 submittal indicate that water flowing min the
diatreme +vill be neutralized.
cc: Jim Dillie
Bruce Humphries
Jim Pendleton
Jim Stevens
m:\min\hhp\minkler
