. ,
Revision of Red Canyon Salinity and Sodic _ _ -
Loading Calculations
Assumptions
1.) Mine inflow is 21.8 gpm (0.049 cfs) into the E seam workings per
Table 8 of Kamon Tempo Report.
2.) The rate of groundwater discharge through~he subcrop into the
alluvium can be no higner than the mine inflow.
3.) Maximum impact on Ward Creek will occur at the lowest flow recorded
by Grand Mesa Coal Company. (Flow = 0.62 cfs; specific conductance =
121 umhos/cm on September 24, 1987).
4.) Water quality in the flooded workings is reflective of water quality
observed at UG-5.
5.) The relationship between TDS and specific conductance is 0.75.
Tnis was determined by calculating total dissolved solids on every
full suite sample taken at the downstream Ward Creek site, dividing
this value by the specific conductance and averaging the ratios.
Note:
The Division's evaluations of material damage are based on specific
conductance. However, the Division's experience with these field measurements
has been poor due to operator error. Thus, we prefer to use the total
dissolved solids (TDS) value prepared by the laboratory. The Red Canyon
data showed a wide discrepancy oetween the lab's gravimetrically derived TDS
and the calculated TDS. As the mass balance calculation, a measure of quality
assurance on the cation and anion values, was good on the data, I used the
calculated TDS.
/en
8937E
