Therefore, all young trees should be <br />included in the counts in each quadrat eo an assessment of total <br />recovery can be made. Unless the distinction between planted tree and <br />invader tree can always be made with confidence, this distinction in the <br />data analysis should be strictly avoided to prevent bias in the <br />conclusions. That is, unless it can be confidently determined whether <br />any particular tree was planted, total numbers of trees (planted plus <br />invader) should be relied upon in the assessment of density and trend. <br />A quadrat size of about 1 square meter would be a good starting point, <br />but a larger quadrat may be needed if a density to total sample number <br />plot does not show considerable smoothing after 30 to 50 samples.
