Mr. Robert F. T. Krassa -6- March 24, 1994
the necessary correction. We will notify you as soon as the newly-corn~ted maps are
submitted.
8. A map describing the lateral extent and pay thickness of coal seams underlying a
permit area is not required by our regulations. Rule 2.04.6(3)(a) requires the
application's geological description to include information of the geology "within the
proposed area to be affecxed over the life of the operation" (emphasis added). For
that area, Rule 2.04.6(3) requires the application to include cross sections that
describe the nature, depth, and thickness of the coal to be mined, as well as each
overburden stratum and the stratum immediately below the lowest coal seam mined.
The Division has anon-proprietary cross section that shows this information, as well
as a map indicating the location of the test holes from which the information for
developing the cross section was obtained. The holes within Rancho Escondido that
made up Cross Section B-B' (maps 5 and 6) are located in the SFJ4 of Section 8, the
lVFJ4 of Section 17, the SFJ4 of Section 17, and the NW/4 of Section 20, all in
T33S, R67W.
A map showing the extent of expected surface subsidence effects has also been
submitted. This map is entitled 'Structure Inventory, Map 20".
We hope these comments provide satisfactory msponses to your letters of
February 22 and 24, 1994. Please let us know if we may be of further assistance.
Sincerely, _ -.. .
Daniel I. Hernandez
Senior Environmental Protection Specialist
ce: Jce Dudash, DMG
Steve Renner, DMG
Ralph Lopez, Basin Resources
M:\OSS4~mm\Kcnasa.dih
