Revised; August 27, I9b7
4.05.8 Acid Forming Spoil
La Plata ¥1 has observed acid drainage that appears to be caused
by surface water moving over recently turned material that probably
contains acid forming material.
To treat this condition; La Plata T1 has cunstrucled a series
of two ponds where manual treatment of the acidic waters will take
place. See '1.0f7(o)for location and extent of the ponds.
Treatment Plan
1.)Finely ground limestone will be the buffer used. This limestone
will act slower but longer than normal lime. The ,ground limestone's
slower - longer action will he more beneficial since the acid
forming drainage is only seasonal and occurs only during the wet
season.
4.) First pond treated ~~ith limestone. ^lajur urecipitation
occurs. When fill .level is reached, water flows into the
second pond for secondary precipitation. Possible additional
treatment may take place here as required.
2.) Outfall. There is rarely any outfall from the second pond as
it contains only seasonal flow. Most of the water evaporates
within the structure. Iluwever, if dischar;,e ever occurs, it is
routed into the main sediment pond for additional settling.
4.0 ,.7(A)
