MINED LAND RECLAMATION BOARD
Presentation Form
V
Site: Golden Wonder Mine
Permit Type: 1 lOd (DMO)
Acres: 3.5 acres
County: Hinsdale
Specialist: Bob Oswald
~o~~~~
~~~
~~
PermitNo.: M-19 8 091
Operator: LKA International, Inc.
Bond Amount: $44,000
Bond Sufficient?: Yes
Formal Public Hearing:
Consideration of operator's request for a Declaratory Order exempting anoff-site stockpiling and transporting
activity from the requirements of a reclamation permit.
Background:
Operator has been found intermittently placing numerous one-ton ore sacks at a loading area that is not on the
permitted area. Ore is characterized as having "serious acid-generating potential" and the sacks are woven
polyethylene, porous and somewhat open on top. Leaching may occur as a result of ore contact with precipitation.
The gravel parking lot used for such ore placement contains no underliner, and is upslope and in close proximity to
an open water body (private fish pond). Hydrologic effect is unknown.
Ore placed here is more conveniently loaded on large trucks for out-of--state hauling to processor. When told by
DMG that ore must be removed, the operator removed it. However, he insists such activity does not fall within
those which require a permit. DMG believes such activity must be in a permit area, as the attached letter explains.
Operator has proposed storing various amounts of sacks and short durations of storage time there, but this is an
activity which cannot be clearly approved by staff.
The operator has requested consideration by the Board that this activity be exempt from the need for a reclamation
permit.
(packet attached)
