or Woody Creek. Gunnison sage-grouse (a candidate species) is also potentially found in the azea
although it is more likely to be found in sagebrush communities below 9000 feet in Gunnison
County. The habitat both on the site, and in the immediate area, is not considered suitable for this
species since it needs lazge tracts of undisturbed area for breeding. With the race track to the
south and the various roads in the vicinity, the area is not desirable for the grouse.
5. Fish Resources
None
6. General Effects of the Operation on the Existing Wildlife of the Area
The biggest effect on wildlife will likely be on grazing for mule deer and elk during those times
of the year when snow covers the higher elevations. Again, this effect is temporary until the mine
is reclaimed.
Gravel extraction and crushing activities will no doubt create some disturbance to animals neaz
the site. However, resident wildlife will generally become habituated to these activities.
Migrating animals will probably avoid the site, but the proposed pit does not block any known
migratory routes, and wildlife should be able to move through the area unimpeded. Due to the
possibility for animal/vehicle collisions, hauling activities will pose a threat to wildlife. Haul
trucks should keep to posted speeds and drivers need to remain awaze of the potential for
collisions.
Vagneur Pit June 07 H-2
