By 2009, Elam will exhaust all the reserves in the current excavation, which is a 40' to 80'
excavation in the flat gravel terrace. The remaining reserves are located in a hillside which is
located directly east of the mining operations, although still within the current pemilt area.
The northern and eastern edges of the re-added (expansion) area will be defined by the existing
road which starts near the middle of the eastern side of the current operation and heads east
before turning south along the drainage gully between the two hills which are inside of the
current permit area and on Elam's property. The southern edge of the expansion area will start at
the end of the road which defines the northern and eastern edges and will head southwest
towards the asphalt plant until it meets up with the current operation. The final mining limits
which aze shown on the picture below will simply be referred to as the expansion throughout the
rest of this application. Under current market conditions, it is expected that the mining of the
entire expansion area will take 16 years to complete.
Significant input for this plan was provided by the surrounding neighbors and Pitkin County.
Lessening of visual impacts has been the driving force behind the mine sequence for the
expansion area. At the time of this filing, Pitkin County has approved the expansion to the permit
under their Special Use regulations.
The designated post-mining use of the reclaimed land is dry rangeland.
Vagneur Pit June 07 i-4
