Memo - ldik2 Long
e. Piezometers
No comment. No data.
f. Lysimeters
-3-
?Gi`1 °4, 1992
I think Mr. Lewis interpreted Adrian Smith's report rather
optimistically. A single Lysimeter, L3W, has tested positive for CN-
on three occasions. However, because the sample; sizes wgre small, Smith
concluded that the data could not be used to say that CN- is or is not
present in the Lysimeter. However, Lewis concluded that CN- is not
present. This conclusion I believe stretches the conclusion of Smith.
(See later comments on Smith report.)
Lewis concludes that the process solution has been "totalry contained
within the lined tailings facility and there has been no ~elease to the
environment." However, there are several points to consi er.
The leak detection system is, in fact, detecting mea;;urable leakage
from the collection pond.
2. With only one monitor well in the tailings area, we ire very
dependant on just one sample.
3. Lysimeter L3W has indications - albeit, indefinite ok perhaps
invalid - of CN-.
4. Monitor Well M-9 has been clean so far, but channeling could occur.
Also, leakage through the compacted clay liner could take years.
2. Adrian Smith Report
(Parts of this report were covered in item 1 above).
One of the things Smith notes is that no quality assurance pro~ram is in
place. I think this is true for nearly all of the sampling I ave seen so
far. BMG needs to be checking on its outside labs more often. They need to
be sending off standards, check samples, blind duplicates, and exercising a
healthy skepticism of outside labs that quality operations nor ally exhibit.
In addition, if the outside labs are running in-house QA 5ampl s, they should
report those to BMG. If the labs are not running QA samples, MG should get
another lab.
3. T.C. Shutt Memorandum to A. Douchane, D. Eaman, G. Shelton (Aprtil 16, 1992)
No specific comments. In-place sampling should be continued until the
Division has the chance to review the quality of BMG's in-hour sampling
program.
4. T.C. Shutt Letter to A. Douchane (April 16, 1992)
I agree that some cf the monitoring samples may be of little or no value.
However, I do not recommend changing procedures until BMG and i<he Division
have had the chanre to review the success of the present abatement p,_.;.__.
