TR-12 Freeman Gulch Vent Shaft Division Director
Soils and Vegetation
I have reviewed the information presented by Jim Stover for the Bowie Resources
Limited (BRL) TR No. 12. The proposed area [o be disturbed for [he Freeman Gulch
Vent Shaft is estimated to be one acre. Given the limited size of the area and the fact that
it has already been disturbed, the information presented by BRL is sufficient to describe
the soils and vegetation resources.
After looking at the vegetation photo (Map 3-1), I agree with what BRI presented in the
TR-12 application. The road and vent shaft are primarily located in a Douglas fir
community. There may be a very small amount of mixed shrub as well. BRI provided a
discussion of the Douglas tir community. The mixed shrub community is already
discussed in the permit.
In your memo, you said Mike Ward is going to field check the vegetation. A letter from
M. Ward confirming the vegetation in the road and vent shaft will be a good addition to
the file. If the vegetation is not a Douglas fir community, BRI will need to update the
permit.
The TR-12 application says that no topsoil was salvaged during the construction of the
light use road and pad due to the steep slopes. The material was sidecast to provide fill
for [he road and pad. BRI is planning [o reclaim [his road and pad by replacing the fill
onto the cu[slopes. To provide a suitable seed bed, the road bed and pad should be
ripped, plowed or scarified prior to seeding (4.03.3).
Seed Mix No. 3, the Upland Mix, will be used for reclamation of the area. This is
acceptable.
Let me know if you have any questions.
