zones of the lower zone (below the Mahogany Zone), are correlatable because
of their persistence and lack of contamination by beds of halite and
nahcolite. Other zones of oil shale found in the Saline Zone occur in the
presence of abundant saline minerals.
Natural gas is produced from the Piceance Creek Dome in the northeastern
part of the basin. Production comes from sandstones in the lower portion of
the Green River Formation, and at greater depths. The lease is located
approximately one mile to the north and northwest of the nearest producing
gas wells. Nhen nearby wells are drilled, oil shale and nahcolite zones
encountered are protected by isolating these areas with cement.
G.1.5.2 Paleontological Resources
Fossils in the Uinta and Green River Formation are generally poor and of
little value. They consist mainly of pollen grains, protozoa, insect parts,
plant tissues, and turtle and fish fragments. There are no known or
suspected paleontological values on the lease.
G.1.5.3 Geologic Ha:tards
No major area of land instability overlaps with the lease; however,
localized landslides, rockfalls, slumps, debris flows, and minor flash
flooding occur along many of the steep drainages (CEI 1983). The site of
the proposed surface facilities will be located on a mesa-like ridge, away
from potential hazani areas.
The Piceance Creek Basin is in seismic risk zone 1, where there is less than
10 percent probability during the next 50 years of a minor or major
earthquake.
There is no known past subsidence within the project area.
~•
G-21
