Geotechnical Consultants, Inc.

August 7, 1989
Mansfield Development
2617 South Wadsworth Circle
Denver, CO 80227
Attn: Ms. Joyce Neville
Subject: Review of Snyder Quarry Amendment Application
Dear Ms. Neville:
At your request the following presents a review and disc~ission of
the Snyder Quarry Amendment Application submitted !~y Castle
Concrete. This review was conducted to assess the impact of the
Snyder Quarry Amendment on the Cave of the Winds faclity and
properties rear the Snyder Quarry, The main emphasie; of this
review was on rock£all and blasting potentials, but other factors
were also considered.
The information reviewed is included in the attached Table 1,
List of References. Conversations were also held with John
Covert, who is representing the Palmer Foundation and Hal
Prostka, President of the Ute Pass Preservation Society. A brief
field reconnaissance was conducted on the Cave of the Winds pro-
perty to the west of the Snyder Quarry, Review of additional
information, as it becomes available, is currently in prcgress.
Data contained in the materials reviewed indicates that the Cave
of the Winds property borders the Snyder Quarry on three sides,
north, south, and west. A portion of the west boundary of the
Snyder Quarry is also apparently bordered by land that is owned
by Castle Concrete, however. The Cave o£ the winds entrance and
facility are located approximately 2500 feet southerly of the
amendment area of the Snyder quarry. the Cave of the winds is
located about 1000 feet southwest of the southwest corner of the
Snyder Quarry permit boundary. The Cave of the Winds facility is
also located on the other side (west side) of Williams Canyon.
These relationships are shown on the attached Figure 1.
The Snyder Quarry amendment area will impact the Cav~> of the
Winds facility and/or property in several ways. The most impact
will come from the visual impact of the quarrying operations and
from surface drainage conditions. Other conditions will also
have impacts on the Cave of the Winds property.
Visual Impact:
The application of the Snyder Quarry amendment area (Reference 1)
presents a rather lengthy discussion of the effects of the visual
impacts on various points within the City of Golorado Springs,
7~5o N. Un1on S4vd., Suite io5 Colorado Springs. Colorado Sog~o (nq) 5:A•~33~
