site. In short, the community established on this site is less diverse than the Blue Flame
site, because of a lack of water.
Therefore, the following aze the revised revegetation standazds for this site:
- The minimum vegetative cover for this site should be 30 percent to reduce the
erosion potential of the steep and rocky terrain.
- Total production will be generally less on asouth-facing slope, but should not fall
below 50 grams per meter squared, or 450 pounds per acre.
- Total stem density on the south-facing slopes should be comparable to the north-
facing slopes. Therefore, the stem density should be at least 600 stems per acre, as
at Blue Flame Mine.
- Species diversity is generally limited by diminished amounts of soil water on south-
facing slopes. Forbs are usually more impacted by any compounded soil moisture
reductions -such as the current drought conditions in Colorado. Both shrubs and
grasses have mechanisms to survive these conditions, while forbs are more sensitive
to extreme reductions in moisture and will be represented less in cover sampling.
Sample Numbers/Sample Adequacy
Sample adequacy calculations were made for vegetative cover of the sampled reclaimed
azea. The following formula, accepted by the CDMG, was used for these calculations:
z z
nmin- t S
(d X~)2
where
n,,,;° =minimum sample size
t =the "T" distribution value at the 90% confidence level
s =sample standazd deviation
s2 =sample variance
d =percent acceptable deviation from the mean (10%)
X~ =sample mean
Sample adequacy was achieved for the vegetation cover parameter. Fifteen cover
transects were initially sampled. Minimum sample size was 15.58, as reported in Table
2.
Statistical Analysis
Evaluation of revegetation establishment and success was accomplished through a
comparison of the reclaimed area mean total vegetative cover with the reclamation
success standazd set forth in the CDMG findings document. A "T" test was used for the
statistical comparison. This is consistent with the recommendations of the Division of
5
