' 2. Production Weights in Grams (includes bag weight)
' I. Introduction
' This report has been prepazed in support of an application for release of liability for the
10-acre mined azea north of County Road 120 within the permit azea of the La Plata No.
1 Mine (Colorado Division of Minerals and Geology permit C-1987-072). Rocky
' Mountain Bank and Trust of Florence, Colorado administered reclamation of the mine.
This document describes the general former vegetative condition of this azea, and depicts
' data collected during the summer of 2002. The 2002 vegetative sampling was required
and performed by the Division of Minerals and Geology to release liability by
demonstrating that the reclaimed mine azea's vegetation has been successfully re-
established and reclaimed. Vegetation sampling was performed in compliance with
Colorado Mined Land Reclamation Boazd Surface Coal Mining Rules 2.04.10 and 4.15
and current botanical and plant ecological methods. The Division of Minerals and
' Geology's Coal Program employees conducted field sampling from July 22°d through
July 26`n
The La Plata No. 1 Mine is located in La Plata County, Colorado, approximately four and
one half miles southwest of Hesperus, Colorado. La Plata Coal Corporation briefly
operated the La Plata No. 1 Mine for coal extraction from 1987 to 1988. The Colorado
Mined Land Reclamation Board revoked the mining and reclamation permit in May
1989. The Boazd forfeited the reclamation bond in July 1989. Subsequent to forfeiture,
Rocky Mountain Bank and Trust, the surety holder, petitioned and received permission
from the Board and Division to undertake remaining reclamation operations at the mine.
From May 1990 to October 1990, permanent reclamation activities took place at the
mine. Completion of backfilling and grading, topsoiling, and revegetation activities in
compliance with the approved permit were finished on date. The revegetation standazds
used to evaluate these azeas aze those currently in effect under the Colorado Surface Coal
Mining Reclamation Act (CRS 33-34-101 et seq).
II. Methods
Timing
Field sampling was performed during the week of July 22"d through the 26`n, 2002. This
time period coincided with maximum vegetative growth potential and development of the
majority of plant species found in both the native vegetation community and the
reclaimed area to be evaluated. Vegetation sampling locations, dates, and methods were
determined, approved, and performed by the Division of Minerals and Geology prior to
fieldwork.
