Page 2
Dan Mathews
May 14, 1987

Concerning both nitrogen and phosphorus requirements based on chemical
tests, some field work has been completed to correlate fertilization
application with growth response; however, the calibration is not complete.
Furthermore, as indicated by R. Jump, desired phosphorus levels are not well
documented because soil material variability affects availability of
phosphorus.
Colorado Yampa Coal Company has evaluated cover data (collected in
1985) for areas containing respread topsoil which was stockpiled for two,
three and six years. As indicated on the following Table 1, the relative
percentage of cover of perennial grasses, perennial fortis and shrubs, and
annuals is similar for all areas reviewed. For the given areas, the average
relative cover of annuals is 46.6% (2 year stockpile), 41.0% (3 year
stockpile), and 45.9% (6 year stockpile). When these values are compared
with another area where reclamation is progressing, it is not unreasonable
to expect these areas will progress toward successful reclamation as well.
Table 2, Relative Cover for Area 9/10 - 9/81 - 22.4AC depicts the trend for
the reclaimed parcels at CYCC. In 1983, the percentage of annual plants was
80.6%; by 1985, that amount decreased to I9.0%.
In summary, CYCC proposes to monitor the reclamation and use the
results of the monitoring program to evaluate the need for fertilizer
amendments. Page 780-138 of Permit C-81-071 has been revised to reflect
this modification.
CYCC will file for public inspection a copy of this application as
required by Rule 2.08.4 (5)(B)(i) in the following public office upon
notification from the Division that this application for a technical
revision is complete:
Office of the Clerk and Recorder
Routt County, Colorado
P.O. Box 773598
Steamboat Springs, CO 80477
Upon notification from the Division that this
revision is complete, an advertisement in a local
pursuant to the requirements of Rule 2.07.3 (2).
publication is attached. This notice will be
required by Rule 2.08.4(5)(b)(i) and proof of publ
with the Division.
Sincerely,
` ~.
Terrell K. Johnson
Environmental Specialist
TKJ/cl
application for technical
newspaper will be placed
The proposed notice of
published only once as
ication will then be filed
Attachments
