MIDIICIG ARID RECLr~.P9ATIOM E'L~Ari January 1986
MT. GUCII•IISOI`I 1`IO. 1 f1I1`lE Revised April 1989 •
Ceal quality data was assembled from lab~~ratory analyses of
core material recovered from the drilling programs. Testing
was by Commercial Testing and Engineering Laboratories in
Denver, Colorado.
2.7.2 Stratiaraphy
Introduction
The general geology of tYris portion of the southeast Piceance
Basin consists of gently north-northeast dipping beds of
sandstone, shale, and coal of Upper Cretaceous and early
Tertiary age. The main coal beds are found in the Upper
Cretaceous Mesa Verde Group which is overlain by the early
Tertiary Ohio Creek Conglomerate and underlain by the upper
cretaceous Mancos Shale. Locally, the Mesa Verde is about
2,500 feet thick. A generalized stratigraphic column is shown
in Figure 2.7.2.A. Exhibit 2.7.1.AA is a geologic map of the
lease area. This map shows the coal outcrop line and strike
and di.p foC the F seam. It has been modified after V.H.
Johnson"s 1949 geologic map. He placed t?ie top of the Upper -
Coa1 Plember above the F seam; however, ARCO coal does not agree
with this interpretation and uses the top of the F seam as the
top of tiie member.
These structural-stratigraphic 'cross sections (Exhibits
2.7.2.D, E and F) have been constructed to show the subsurface
geology t}iroLrgh the mine lease and have been updated to reflect
structural interpretations based on drilling up to 198.5.
Exhibit 7..7.2.D (Cross-section A-A") crosses the entire lease
from north to south, Exhibit 2.7.2.E (Cross-section B-B")
crosses the first 5-year Mine Plan permit P.rea from east to
west, and Exhibit 2.7.2.F (Cross section C-C") is another
east-west section which is located south of Exhibit 2.7.2.E.
characteristic lithologic logs and 'geophysical logs have been
included for core holes SOM 36, SOM 47, SOM 65, SOM 6, SOiH 17,
SCM 35-35A, SOM 38, SOM 41 and SOf~I 42; these are Exhibits
2.7.2.A thro~~~l~. 2.7.2.C.1 and 2.7.2.G tliro~.rgh 2.7.2.L.1.
Geophysical logs only have been inclLrded for core ]soles SOM 2,
SOP' S0 and SOM 59; these are Exhibits 2.7.Z M through 2.7.2.P.
•
2 -284 ~
.•
