• Furthermore, a batch aerobic biological treatment test (a 24-hour test) was conducted to evaluate
manganese removal and to evaluate effects on further reducing TDS levels. Effluent from one
anaerobic column was subjected to aerobic biodegradation using an activated sludge culture
(sludge) obtained from a municipal activated sludge plant. The effluent and a control were
aerated for 24 hours and initial and final filtered samples were analyzed for manganese and TDS.
Aerobic biodegradation did not impact TDS levels but was successful in reducing manganese
concentrations from an initial value of 0.834 mg/L to 0.376 mg/L, or approximately 55%
removal efficiency. This aerobic test was intended as a quick screening test and the results
reported are not conclusive. Aerobic biodegradation studies aze continuing and are expected to
provide more positive results for both manganese and TDS reduction.
Information collected to date leads to the following conclusions:
• Cazbon removal of over 90 percent was achieved during anaerobic treatment.
• Sulfate reduction up to 58 percent was observed during the acclimation phase at a
cazbon to sulfate ratio of one pound of cazbon to two pounds of sulfate. Sulfate
concentrations in the effluent continue to decrease.
• A small reduction in manganese concentrations was observed during anaerobic
treatment.
• Significant reduction in manganese concentrations was observed during the 24-hour
aerobic treatment reaction. Further testing for manganese reduction is in progress.
• Total dissolved solids concentrations increased during anaerobic treatment due to
increased alkalinity and byproducts of the anaerobic degradation process. The 24-
hour aerobic treatment reaction did not affect the concentration of TDS.
Data continues to be collected to further evaluate the process and determine kinetic pazameters
for design.
i
Battle Mounmin Resources, Irtc.
p~11002671reportslmnrchrptltr26wvmngtmarch.dac 55 March 22, 1999
