iR <br />~~ <br />Dudash <br />Page Z <br />January 5, 1998 <br /> <br />Six alluvial wells are currently monitored along the southern permit boundary (AW-1 through A W- <br />6). Wells AW-l, AW-2, and AW-3 are located immediately down gradient of the proposed <br />stockpile pad and should provide adequate monitoring of leachate from the pad. Proposed Pond B <br />is located beyond these wells to the southeast. We should recommend at least one additional alluvial <br />monitoring well down gradient of proposed Pond B, which would serve to monitor the entire <br />disturbancearea associated with the new pond and potential discharge to groundwaterfrom beneath <br />the pond. The well should be designed such that the perforated casing is installed from the base of <br />the alluvium and should be extended across the entire thickness of the alhwial aquifer. <br />We should also consider future monitoring of the North Fork of the Gunnison River down gradient <br />of the coal stockpile pad and Pond B, if groundwater monitoring results indicate significant <br />degradation of alluvial water quality. <br />c: Larry Routten <br />
