iR
~~
Dudash
Page Z
January 5, 1998

Six alluvial wells are currently monitored along the southern permit boundary (AW-1 through A W-
6). Wells AW-l, AW-2, and AW-3 are located immediately down gradient of the proposed
stockpile pad and should provide adequate monitoring of leachate from the pad. Proposed Pond B
is located beyond these wells to the southeast. We should recommend at least one additional alluvial
monitoring well down gradient of proposed Pond B, which would serve to monitor the entire
disturbancearea associated with the new pond and potential discharge to groundwaterfrom beneath
the pond. The well should be designed such that the perforated casing is installed from the base of
the alluvium and should be extended across the entire thickness of the alhwial aquifer.
We should also consider future monitoring of the North Fork of the Gunnison River down gradient
of the coal stockpile pad and Pond B, if groundwater monitoring results indicate significant
degradation of alluvial water quality.
c: Larry Routten
