RECEIVED
Division of Minerals and Geology /
Department of Natural Resowces
1313 Sherman St., Room 215
Denver, CO 80203
November 26, 2002
DEC 0 2 2002 ~~
Division of Minerals and Geology
To Whom It May Concern,
This letter is in reference to the application of a permit to open a gravel pit in the circle 23 area in Chaffee
County south of Buena Vista. Ow ranch is the closest in proximity to this activity and I wish to voice my
concern for several reasons: 1) this procedwe will devalue ow ranch, 2) this land was used as a sewage
dump for years and could possibly spread bacteria into the environment and into our adjacent spring a
couple hundred yards away which is for wild life and livestock, 3) the land surcounding the proposed gravel
pit is a pristine azea where three ranches corner at the base of beautiful Mt. Princeton, 4) the activity will
disturb a wild life area, 5) Chaffee is trying to cluster home sites and clustering gravel pits may also be
beneficial as we put gravel pits into their proper setting (as this is not), 6) our personal situation here is that
we are in a moisture deprivation period and have had to sell all of ow cattle. We have limited income to
presently support our ranch; therefore, we are selling two lots adjacent to this area and our sale will be
greatly affected. Thus, the ability to keep ow ranch going will be inhibited.
It would be greatly appreciated if you will work with us on these issues. Actually, this initiative taken with
out the wnsideration of local ranchers will be the last straw. We have inhabited this valley and have been
ranching since 1959. We would like to continue ranching due to the water and environmental support it
lends ow community and wild life. You must understand that we are becoming weary of this, seemingly,
up hill battle to survive as ranchers.
Please take time to consider ow plea. /
Sincerelg ,, Q ~ ~~ /~ `//
~YJU72i''~~ ~J C ~J - O ~
)-t-i9~g-~~~
J ce Sim n ~. peJ r_'.Q, f~ 0.~ /
~e-z-~ t~ ~-~'
