Design and construction of the river park will be funded by the U.S.
Army Corps of Engineers Section 206 Aquatic Ecosystem Restoration Program. The
existing reclamation plan needs to be revised to allow park construction.
The following is a recap of plans for this stretch of river. The objective for this site is to
restore a proper riverine ecosystem to this heavily impacted reach of the river plus
provide some public access. Meanders will be restored throughout the 2,500 linear foot
reach. J-hooks and cross vanes will be constructed to stabilize the new channel and
enhance habitat. The Paonia Ditch diversion structure, at the upstream end of the reach,
will be reconstructed to utilize a concrete headgate to limit the volume of water into the
ditch to the decreed amount. A low-head rock diversion structure will be placed to
eliminate the annual reconstruction of the push-up dams. This will provide fish passage.
A series of five rock drop pool structures will be constructed below the diversion to
stabilize the channel and enhance habitat. Along with channel realignment, five acres of
the floodplain will be regarded and replanted with native riparian grasses and shrubs.
Approximately 5,000 feet of live silt fence and 1,000 bundles of willows will be planted.
I am enclosing the plan Jeff Crane has designed for the park. The above description is
from Jeff Crane as well.
The plan is to build this park next year. While nothing is a sure thing I'd say this park
construction is about as close to a sure thing as it gets. United Companies is willing to
