iii iiuiiiiiiii iii
0
,~ "h
April 21, 1994

Mr. Joseph Dudash ~~;, ............ . ___ _ .y
Colorado Division of Minerals and Geologry
1313 Sherman, Room 215
Denver, CO 80203
Subject Basin Resources, New Elk Minc, C-81-013, Permit Renewal Stipulation i2 Response
Dear Mr. Dudash,
Basin is pleased to provide a revised hydrologic monitoring plan for the New Elk Mine with the attached
revised Tables 27 and 28 and Map 8. This plan adds four monitoring sites to evaluate water levels in the New
Elk workings, seven monitoring wells established in conjunction with the remedial action plan, and two alluvial
wells.
Sites NEW-1, NEW-2, NEW-3 and NEW-4 will be used to evaluate water levels at the West Portal shaft, the
East Portal Shaft, the' lower Apache Canyon shaft and at at new well location near the com~eyor access road.
Field parameters will he acquired monthly and an annual short list will be analyzed for all samples but the
Apache Canyon shaft. Winter access is problematic, and thus quarterly sampling has been indicated, rather
than monthly sampling.
The Corrective Action Plan associated with the remedial action work located near the Industrial Building
requires quarterly monitoring of two organics and water level on a quarterly basis for Colorado Department
of Health. The Division will be notified of the results in the Annual Hydrology Report.
Basin plans to establish two additional alluvial wells. PAW-8 will be located below the Refuse Disposal Area
and PAW-9 will be located near PRS-4 below anv disturbance associated with the facilities area. These wells
will provide better information on the impacts of mining along the Middle Fork of the Purgatoire River.
Monitoring frequency will be compatible with the monitoring of other alluvial +aells in the PAW-series at the
site.
Please contact me if you have any questions.
Sincerely,
~~~,~ ~ ~~
Catherine W.
