Ronald w. Cattany
Division Director
P.O. BOX l87 Natural Resource Trustee
Craig, CO 80203
Re: Trapper Mine, Minor Revision No. 200 Shrub establishment test plot description
Dear Mr. Luke:
The Division has reviewed your application for MR-200. This revision proposes to include a description of
the Shrub establishment study plots into the Reclamation plan for the Trapper Mine. This study was planned
and implemented trough cooperation of mine operators, Colorado State Range Science Department and
Colorado Division of Mineral and Geology in an effort to demonstrate shrub establishment techniques
applicable to conditions in Northwest Colorado. The Division appreciates TMI's cooperation with the study
and the desire to maintain and continue to monitor Trapper's plots beyond the initial 5-year scope of the
project.
Since the study treatments vary from Trappers approved reclamation plan, a description of the study needed
to be included in the Trapper Mine permit. TMI provided MR-200 to incorporate the shrub establishment
study description into the permit. The Division's review found two items that need additional inforruation
from TMI.
Revised page 4-125 provides a description of the plot treatments beginning with the southernmost
treatment, plot 1, and progressing northwards to plot 6. Plot 6 consists of Trappers approved
reclamation plan and range AB seed mix. Comparison with Shrub Establishment Study Annual
Progress Reports submitted to DMG by Mr. Mark Pashke of CSU find an error in Trapper's
description of the Study plots.
CSU's record of the plot treatments is included with this letter Plot 1 consists of 15 cm topsoil strip
seeded with seed mix 1 and 2. The two non-topsoiled treatments aze at the northern end of the study
area.
2. MR-200 provides a general description of the study seed mixes. The Division need a reference to the
actual seed mixes used. I am including copies from CSU's 2005 progress report for detail of the seed
mixes used in the study plots. Since these seed mixes vary from Trapper's approved seed mixes, they
need to be included in the permit.
Office of Office of Colorado
Mined Land Reclamation Active and InaRive Mines Geological Survey
