The site is located throughout Sections 11, 12, 13, 14, 24, and 25, Township 5,
South, Range 65 West, of the 6`h Principal Meridian in Arapahoe County, Colorado.
The mission of the Colorado Division of Wildlife (CDOW) is to protect, preserve, enhance, and manage
wildlife and their environment for the use, benefit and enjoyment of the people of Colorado and its
visitors. One of the ways we achieve our mission is to comment on land use proposals such as the
request we received from your agency. Our goal is to provide complete, consistent and timely
information to all entities who request comment on matters within our statutory authority and our
mission.
The current mining plan (approximately 1,5510 acres) has involved mining sand up to depths of up to 25
feet in the uplands while sand mining in the river bed was permitted only to a maximum depth of 8 feet
or less in order to protect the clay seam layer within Coal Creek.
Colorado Division of Wildlife staff conducted a raptor survey along Coal Creek on May 7, 2004. The
survey was led by CDOW Raptor Specialist Brent Bibles, Terrestrial Biologist Aaron Linstrom, and
District Wildlife Manager Travis Hams. The team conducted a raptor survey along the cottonwood-
willow riparian comdor of Coal Creek north from Arapahoe County Road 50 to Yale, which covers a
distance of approximately 7 miles.
DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES, Russell George, Executive Director
WILDLIFE COMMISSION, Philip James, Chair • Jeffrey Crawford, Vice-Chair • Brad Phelps, Secretary
Members, Bernard Black • Tam Burke • Rick Enstrom • Claire O'Neal • Robert Shoemaker • Ken Torres
Ex Officio Members, Russell George and Don Ament
