Map of the western parz of Calorado, showing the location of the mine and nattttal
drainages svttplcd tt:ladve to major towns, the Colorado Minrtal Bolt, and the San Juan
Volcanic Field. Modified from Ficklin et al (1992) to incorporate new sites sampled.
alkalinity and/or acidity, and, when possible, dissolved oxygen content. Both' unfiltered and
filleted (0.1µm) water sample splits was collected at each sample site. Filtered and unfiltered
splits were acidi5ed with nitric acid for metal analysis. In addition, a filleted spilt was
collected and acidified ftx analysis of dissolved iron spedes. An uttacidified filtered split was
collected for anion analysis. An unfiltett:d wa[er sample was collected for hydrogen and
oxygen isotopic analysis. Sulfate for sulfur and oxygen isotopic analysis was collected by
acidifica[ion of a 0.1 µm-filtersd water sample to less than pH 4.0, followed by addirion of 1.0
M BaC12 solution to precipitate b.~tritc (BaSO4): the precipitate was filterrd later in the
laboratory.
Metal cunccntrations were dctcrmincd by atomic absorption spectrophotometry
(Aruscavage and Cnx:k, 1987), inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectroscopy
(ICP-AIS, ],ichte and others, 1987}, and indttcdvcly coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-
MS, axing a tecltttiqueunder development at the U. S. Geological Survey, A. L. Meier, oral
comm., 1992). Selected mine-drainage compositions determined in this study ate listtd in
Table 3. For the pttrposes of this tt:port, we consider only samples collected at the tirairtage
sottrt:e (such as an atilt or spring), and samples alert were tiltered prior to analysis.

r~
LJ
