and 5hiF2427 from devastating soil sliding and slumping. The impairments
to the physical integrity of these sites have occurred to such an extent
that they are no longer viable locations for historical archaeological
data retrieval. In addition the structural remains at 5MF2427 have been
damaged ana cannot foreseeably be protected from further destruction from
the forces of nature.
The prehistoric component of site 5hiF950 has been substantially
damaged by road construction through the site prior to the establishment
of the Trapper t•1ir~e. Based on what was observed during site recording,
it is estimated that up to 9U% of the prehistoric component has been
disturbed. In addition, no temporally diagnostic artifacts were oLserved
nor were cultural features or indications of subsurface deposits de-
fected. As a result, it appears very unlikely that the site contains
material likely to yield information important to the prehistory of the
region.
It is apparent from the foregoing discussion that sites 5biF950 and
5t•1F2427 have suffered disturbances which have adversely impaired their
integrity as archaeological and architectural entities. As a result it
is recommended that neither site be considered eligible for inclusion in
the National Register of Historic Places. In addition, it is suggested
that the recordation conducted by Nickens and Associates at these two
locations be considered adequate mitigation of the impacts expected to
take place when the respective site areas are mined for coal.
hianayement Considerations
In Fiay of 1987, site 5hiF95L' was rerecorded and site 5MF2427 recorded
for the first time by Irickens and Associates. Neither site is recom-
mended as eligible for inclusion in the Iational Register of Flistoric
Places. This evaluation of site significance is a reconunendation only
artd requires a final determination of site significance by the Colorado
State Historic Preservation Office. To obtain such a determination, a
copy of this report including the state site forms contprisiny Appendix A
must be forwarded to the SHPO. If the SHPO concurs with the recommenda-
tion that sites 5tdF950 ar~d 5MF2427 be considered insignificant cultural
resources, it is unlikely that Trapper Mining, Inc, will be required to
conduct additional historical or archaeological work at the site.
References
Buckles, William G. and Nancy B.
