The site consists of the remains of a substantial stone dwelliny, a
stone cellar, outline of a small outbuilding, two stone-lined wells,
stone retaining wall, a dump, fencelines and trace roads. East of the
main building complex was an area cleared for grazing and planted to
grass in which was fountl a leveled area where another outbuilding had
been located. The slope cn which the main building cluster is located is
actively sliding downslope resulting in massive soil slumping and crack-
ing which is tearing the site apart.
The stone dv+ellina was a substantial three-room structure measuring
16 by 45 meet on an east-west axis. The rooms are all in a line separ-
ated by stone walls and connected by doorways. The only entrance into
the house was on the vest end. Randomly coursed tabular sandstone slabs
set irr mud mortar form the walls. The walls have a smooth finish both on
the exterior and interior surfaces and, though variable in height due to
collapse, stand up to 5 feet in height. Window and doorway openings were
framed v+ith wood and it is presumed that a wooden roof was a feature of
the structure at one time. Soil slumping immediately adjacent to the
west of the building has resulted in the loss of the southwest corner of
the structure and whatever landing there may have been in front of the
doorv+ay.
The remains of a stone cellar are located about 50 feet southwest of
the dwelling. This measures about i2 by 15 feet northwest to southeast
with the entrance on the northwest. The ends of the structure were con-
structed of tabular sandstone while the sides may have been earthen. It
appears that the cellar may have been at least partially subterranean
with a domed roof. The entire structure has dropped downslope about
eight vertical feet. This has resulted in deformation and collapse of
the walls.
Another structure location was found about 1CU feet south of the
main dwelling. This appeared as a 14 by 20 foot (east-west) area leveled
into the slight hillside. This appeared to have been dug down to a depth
of about 1~ feet and had an entrance on the south side of the wrest eleva-
tion. A few feet to the west of this is a stone-lined well at least 20
feet deep.
About 50 feet west of the stone residence is a retaining wall made
of randomly coursed tabular sandstone slabs. This appears to be holding
a leveled area to the south. In this leveled area is another stone-lined
~+ell and an area where sandstone slabs are scattered around. The well
appears to be somewhat deformed front the downhill slope movement. The
function of the sandstone slab area is unknown but may have been a garden
area. Non-native daffodils were found nearby. The entire sandstone slab
area is broken up by slumping and has puddles of water collecting. Steps
lead down through the retaining wall onto another possibly leveled area
to the north. 4iest of this, as the slope steepens, is a trash disposal
area.
About 750 feet east of the homestead complex, in the pasture area is
a leveled area adjacent to the west of a trace road. This measures
roughly 40 feet square and probably represents the location of sor,~e sort
of an outbuilding associated with stock raising activities.
