Please find enclosed an application to revise West Elk Coal Company's
Mt. Gunnison Mining and Reclamation Plan. The application was submitted
to the Colorado Mined Land Reclamation Division and the federal Office
of Surface Mining to add 320 acres to the current five-year permit area
in Section 20, T13S, R90W, 6 P.M. This expansion of the five-year
permit boundary is, in part, to accommodate a revision to the
underground mining sequence necessitated by geologic conditions
encountered during mining which in turn required that the mains be
relocated. In addition the revision will permit the relocation of the
subsidence test panel. By relocating the subsidence test panel, the
barrier pillar adjacent to the test panel can be increased in width
which will reduce the possibility of overriding loading on the life of
mine mains being developed in the area. Since this boundary revision is
to allow a revision to the underground mining sequence only, no surface
facilities will be constructed in the area.
