Christine E. Johnston
Mountain Coal Company
Page 2
July 29, 1997
5. MCC, in the revision cover letter, proposes to excavate approximately 16,000 CY of
material to reduce the MSB slope. MCC states further that the amount of material to be
moved to reclaim the MSB will increase by approximately 9,000 CY It would appeaz
that MCC is proposing to leave the 2,000 - 3,000 CY of material relocated at the portal
bench storage area. Please explain how MCC will achieve approximate original contour
at the excavation area and at the portal bench storage area without returning all of the
material to the excavation area.
6. In the second paragraph of the cover letter, MCC states that of the 16,000 CY of material,
4,000 CY of topsoil will be stockpiled. The third paragraph, however, states that 1,000
CY of topsoil will be stockpiled. Please clarify this apparent discrepancy by providing
additional information on the exact location and corresponding volumes of topsoil
removal and stockpiling.
If you have any questions, please contact me.
Sincerely,
1~9:~+1 a¢ P ~
Michael P. Boulay
Environmental Protection Specialist
c: Susan Burgmaier, David Berry
